Emek Sahnesi - Grand Pera

The cinema, whose architecture was Rafael Alguadiş, was opened in 1924, and its first name “Angel’’ comes from the yellow-colored orange “art nouveau” angel sculptures placed on both sides of the screen, and the Angel/Melek Apartment, which is used as the entrance of the cinema.

Emek Cinema, which has been serving as the main host of the Istanbul Film Festival for the last 20 years, had to close its doors in July 2009 due to reasons such as physical inadequacies and lack of interest by movie lovers, despite all the efforts of its operators. With the subsequent works, the renovation of Emek Cinema was realized in accordance with the original Cercle d’Orient building in Istanbul, and the renewal was carried out based on the original project in 1924.

Emek Cinema, which offers the highest technological equipment in terms of cinematography techniques was reunited with cinema lovers as “the cinema for all of us”.

The most important feature of Angel/Melek Cinema with a capacity of 540 people, is its hall that was vertically oriented. This architectural design, which allows the curtain to be comfortably watched from all three sides, distinguished Angel/Melek Cinema from its counterparts. The hall decorated with baroque and rococo embellishments, such as needlework, the particular gold gilded ceiling and wall decorations attract attention as a product of elaborate workmanship.
